Franciscan Volunteer Minister

Franciscan Volunteer Ministry (Silver Spring, MD)

​

Under the supervision of a Holy Name Province Friar Site Supervisor, volunteered in four different ministries throughout the course of a committed year of service in Silver Spring, MD, following the charism of St. Francis and the program's core values of simple living, intentional community, and prayer. Ministries included:

​

  • ASL Interpreting

    • Archdiocese of Washington's Department of Special Needs Ministry at the Pope Francis Center, including work with Gallaudet Catholic Campus Ministry​

  • Other service work at St. Camillus Catholic Church

    • St. Francis International School​, Extended School Program. Taught basic American Sign Language and helped students with their homework

    • Faith Formation. Taught as Assistant Catechist for first level Communion children

    • Maria's Meals, Catholic Charities. Assembled and gave away free breakfast to day laborers at dawn weekly

  • Service mission trip with St. Francis Builds to Houston to rebuild after hurricane flooding

Apprentice Interpreter (August 2016 - May 2017)

Under the guidance of a trained mentor at the Rochester Institute of Technology, interpreted 20 hours each week between American Sign Language and spoken English for the National Technical Institute for the Deaf's Department of Access Services on the College of Imaging Arts and Science/Center for Recreation and Intramural core team. Worked in a variety of academic and nonacademic settings and attended a minimum of 10 hours of professional development activities each week including required colloquium meetings, Core Team meetings, manager meetings, and optional In Service Training sessions. Completed: Public Speaking, Creating a Working Thesaurus, Build Your E-Portfolio, and Chem-is-try.
